GURPS DF Session 42 - Hunt for Sir Sacnoth, part 4
In part four of the adventure, the group has just fought off an attack by lizardfolk and giant frogs, only to discover that the reason for their enemies' retreat has more to do with the arrival of a hydra...
Session Date: Thursday 11 July 2019
Party roster:
Miao Miao, cat-folk swashbuckler, 342 points (PC)
- "Jenkins", human servant, 146 points (NPC Ally)
- Brother Warian, human monk (initiate), 171 points (NPC Ally)
Davin Emberwood, human wizard, 304 points (PC)
Llandor the Gray, wood-elf scout, 247 points (PC)
Sir Yvor Gryffyn, human knight, 309 points (PC*)
- Torr, human boy, ?? points (NPC "volunteer")
Sister Miriam Suntemple, human cleric, 260 points (PC)
Harrison "Happy" Badapple, halfling thief, 249 points (PC)
*Yvor's player was absent, and Happy's player agreed to take over in the meantime.
Location: Caves beneath One Tree Island, Marrowmarsh
This session was basically just a big fight with the hydra. We started off with Llandor's held Wait manoeuvre from last session, as the elf unleased his arrow into the beast. The rest of the party started to reform up the front line to face the new threat, while the hydra stepped up and grabbed the other two big frogs from the Glue spell with two more of its heads, crunching the first giant frog in its mouth as it did so. The group realised that the hydra had seven heads total.
The front line was not able to hold the hydra. Davin cancelled his Glue spell to give his teammates room to move, and then proceeded to cast Great Haste on Sir Yvor. Miao and Yvor slashed and stabbed the beast repeatedly, wounding it while avoiding its many bite attacks, all the while Llandor was peppering the creature with arrows. Nonetheless it kept coming. Every attack on the hydra brought the possibility of being poisoned, as it's attacker risked being sprayed with venomous blood with each hit. The hydra slammed into Sir Yvor as it charged; it pushed him out of the way but Yvor's shield protected him from harm.
At this point, the party might have thought that they had the beast flanked, however it was now passed the front line fighters, opening up the more vulnerable party members to attack. It was easy for the hydra to slam Jenkins the manservant to the floor and then trample over his body. Jenkins was out for the count. Its next attack was a bite on Brother Warian, dropping the monk in one hit. Warian collapsed but managed to stay conscious; his Armour buffs on other party members remaining in effect.
In the space of some 2-3 seconds the PCs hit all 7 of the hydra's heads, causing enough wounding to drop the hydra dead, before any of its new heads could regrow. In total the hydra had taken over 11x its HP, causing death by total body destruction.
Sister Miriam healed Warian, and then cured him (I think with Remove Poison). Brother Warian healed Jenkins.
Davin cast the Illusion of a sleeping hydra at the junction ahead, hoping to fool the lizardfolk that had retreated into thinking that the hydra had finished them off. The party pulled back into the cave to rest and heal.

I'm sure I've missed some details, but the above gives the gist of it. I need to get these summaries done quicker, while my memory is fresh, as my paper notes are incomplete. I'm also looking to incentivise the players to submit their own write-ups; bonus CP should hopefully motivate some of them at least.
