DF Campaign Training Costs

I use training expenses in my Dungeon Fantasy campaign, but my rules are different than those suggested of p.93 of DFRPG Exploits.

Taking the suggested cost of $40 per point as the starting guideline for training costs, I came up with a sliding scale. I charge to improve known skills/traits more than one level between adventures. This also goes for primary attributes and secondary characteristics, which the suggested rule in Exploits doesn't charge money for improving at all.

It feels discordant to me when a PC improves a skill, trait, or stat by 3 levels in one leap, simply because the player had stockpiled the points. DF may be heroic fantasy, but even fictional characters ought to improve over time from a believable story perspective.

I initially considered a hard cap of one level of improvement, for each skill/trait/attribute, between each adventure. However ultimately I decided a sliding scale of cost would be fairer. The increasing costs will represent the additional charges from the teacher for intensive one-on-one training at ever diminishing returns; this will also naturally self-police in a way that should obviate the need for a hard cap.

So for my campaign I came up with the following training costs.

- Improving an existing skill which was used in the adventure: $0 per point (free) for the first level of upgrade. After that, or to improve an existing skill which did not see significant use: $20 per point for the next level of upgrade. Then, $40 per point for the level after that; then $80 per point; and so on.

- Improving an attribute or secondary characteristic: $0 per point for the first level of upgrade. After that, $20 per point for next level; then $40 per point; and so on.

- Improving an existing levelled advantage: $0 per point for the first level of upgrade. After that, $20 per point for next level; then $40 per point; and so on.

- Learning a new skill from template: $40 for the first level. Further training then costs $80 for next level; then $160 per point; and so on.

- Learning a new advantage from template: $40 per point for the whole advantage or for the first level, if a levelled advantage. Further training then costs $80 per point for the second level; then $160 per point; and so on.

- Learning or improving spells is treated like skills.

The above goes for any stat, skill, or trait on the professional template. Off-template traits will usually cost more. Certain common skills may still cost $40 to learn, even if they are off-template (GM's call). Most traits that are not on the PC's template will start at $80 per point.
