DF Novices, Team-A, Session 42 - screenshots

Session 42 was last week (there was no session the preceding Tuesday). The party re-entered the cursed mine, and met opposition more concerted than they were perhaps expectingWe were some time into the fight before I remembered to take screenshots. I include these below.

, dwarf knight, 155 points (PC)

------

The party proceeded slowly down the mine entrance tunnel while Eleanor looked for any traps. She discovered a tripwire, but unfortunately only after it had been triggered. However there was no resulting trap; in fact nothing else seemed to happen. The cord was followed and disappeared into a hole in the tunnel wall. From this Eleanor concluded that an alarm had been sprung. The group stopped their progress and looked for a secret door in the tunnel, but did not find one. Then they proceeded on cautiously, this time with Ben and Doran in front.

As they neared the end of the tunnel, where lies the previously discovered secret door that leads to the rest of the dungeon, from out of the darkness flew an arrow which struck Ben in the chest. Fortunately the missile was stopped by a combination of mail hauberk and the half-ogre barbarian's very tough skin. There was a momentary pause, before the party rushed forward. By the time they reached the end of the tunnel, the secret door was already closed.

Ben found the concealed door and tried to push it open, but he found it stuck fast. Rather than have Eleanor unlock the door, Ben instead opted to smash it open. The secret door itself was not solid rock, but was in fact wood covered in a thin layer of stone. It didn't take many seconds before Ben had it smashed in two. Squeezing through the opening, Ben found himself facing a combined group of goblins, orcs, and hobgoblins.

There were 7 goblins armed with a mixture of long knives, hatchets, and bows; 3 orc archers; and 3 hobgoblins, two of whom were wearing scraps of armour and armed with heavy falchions and shields, and the third was wearing only a loincloth and wielding a two-handed great-axe. These were subsequently reinforced by 2 axe and shield wielding orcs, and 2 dire wolves*.

The fight was too complex to break down in detail, but here are the pics.

Turn 16. Eleanor was invisible thanks to her magic cape. Ben and Randall had been buffed by Erizax with the Blur spell. Erizax had been buffed by Dagne the new hireling cleric (the effect of the spell is not yet known). Dagne herself was still in the tunnel behind Erizax, who was standing in the doorway. One of the hobgoblin swordsmen had fallen prone from his injuries. The grey area indicates the reduced luminosity from the party's light sources, plus the torch which an orc threw on the floor. The furthest corners of the cave remained in darkness, and so are black on the VTT map.

Turn 18

Turn 18. Eleanor had slashed the hand of one of the orc archers, crippling it, and negating her Invisibility in the process. The big hobgoblin, not as tall as Ben but stockier, was refusing to die, despite having sustained more than enough injury to kill a lesser mortal. Berserkers will keep going until it is too late, but they can be dangerous up til the moment when they keel over. The fallen hobgoblin had got back up. Randall was not holding up well against the onslaught of the other hobgoblin swordsman and the dire wolf combined. Merrill was trying to help, but as the newest (and least experienced) party member, there is only so much that the fledgling martial artist can do.

Turn 18

Turn 21. We paused it there for the night. The party is getting pushed back to the wall, and Randall is in danger of collapse. We will see whether the PCs can reinforce their weakest flank before it crumbles...

Turn 21

* My dire wolf is slightly modified from the stats in DFRPG Monsters, mostly to account for the fact that we use the Fantastic Dungeon Grappling rules. Nordlond Bestiary and Enemies Book was useful inspiration in this regard. Combined bite and grapple can be extremely worrying.
