DF Novices, Team-A, Session 57 - Clearing the Mine

We played last Tuesday as usual. No summary from a player yet, but I wanted to mark the event because the cursed mine is finally "cleared".

Campaign Date:    27 and 28 September, Year 645 of the Vycenaean Empire.

------

The party rested and recovered after the attack from the huge slime, before proceeding to map out the remains of the mine; doors and tunnels which had not yet been explored and so on.

They checked out the smaller tunnel they had previously passed, and found another cavern with several short and narrow tunnels leading off from it. This area was empty. Doran spent some time and confirmed that this was an active mine with a small vein of silver ore. He brought a nugget of ore as evidence.

The group returned to a door they had seen but never reached previously, and found an armoury room containing a few good quality shortswords and hatchets, along with a masterwork greataxe and short spear, along with a bunch of rusty and cheap quality weapons. They piled up the stuff they wanted to come back for, and proceeded onwards.

They revisited the room of magical darkness and spent some time trying to find some ways to mitigate or counteract the effect, but no spell of Erizax nor the goblinsight (Infravision*) of Stout were able to penetrate the obscurity. Eleanor explored the room slowly in the darkness, but found nothing but four walls and a floor. Eventually they determined the room was empty, and proceeded onwards.

This seemed like they had checked the whole dungeon at this point, and found no goblins (or other humanoids) in residence. However there was a possible location for a secret door which Eleanor remembered from an ambush during a previous visit, so the party returned to that junction. Eleanor did indeed find a secret door, and it was simple enough to open. Beyond the door was a narrow straight passage of about 30 ft, leading to a dead end. Of course, this dead end also had a secret door, and that opened into the wide passageway parallel to the first passageway. This explained how the goblins were able to get between the two and surround the group.

The group explored some more but found nothing and heard only rats in the distance. As it was late and the party had no chance to get back to town before dark, they holed themselves in the armoury and Erizax cast Magelock on the door and then filled the room with Mystic Mist. They camped there for the night and were not disturbed. They returned to Bridgegate in the morning.

In addition to the toll at the town gate, there was also a fine for Doran and Yorgen not being properly clothed. Some PCs grumbled at the fine, but while they might look like vagabonds, with their weapons and metal armour, the group was clearly not poor vagabonds.

------

Now the players are deciding their character advancement and shopping requirements before the next session - a lot of non-consumable items (including clothes and armour) for Ben, Doran, and Yorgen now have to be replaced or repaired because they were partially or almost completely "consumed" by the slime. Time will skip ahead for the downtime period, which will also allow for Merrill to be reintroduced when his personal quest comes to an end.

* Infravision is the name of the trait, and of the spell with the same effect. However that feels to me like an anachronistic term in a fantasy setting. Something such as Goblinsight sounds better to me.
