DF Novices, Session 3 - Failed Negotiations

We played session 3 last night. One of the players had to pull out at the last minute, and another was late, but for continuity I asked other players to cover for them rather than me run them as NPCs or having them "disappear" at a critical moment. So the party had a full roster for what turned out to be a session-long battle.

Session Date:    Tuesday 11 October 2022

Party roster:
Agis Keylar, wood elf cleric, 64 points (PC)
Borgergorg
, half-ogre barbarian, 65 points (PC)
Doran Longbeard, dwarf warrior (knight), 65 points (PC)
Eleanor Bayley, human thief, 65 points (PC)
Erizax Ofaris, human wizard, 65 points (PC)
Fenn Shepard, human scout, 65 points (PC)

I will hopefully be posting player write-up(s) soon, but in lieu of words, here are some screenshots.

Lost in translation:

The negotiation has failed and the goblin spears form up with the reinforcements:

Three goblins and both hobs are down, but the tide is turning as the PCs start to falter:

Goblins flee as caprinids enter the fray, wildly attacking both sides:

Eleanor had just stabbed a caprinid in the chest with her long knife (using her Luck to reroll damage) and 2 impaling got through, for 6 total (tripled for the vitals hit). Her knife blade is red, and the caprinid's lung is probably filling with blood, but it is somehow still standing. Considering that by this point that same caprinid had already been stabbed 4 times in the torso with Borgergorg's greatsword, passing multiple stun/knockdown checks, consciousness saves, and four death checks, it shows why berserkers are dangerous to everyone!

We paused there because it was very late.
Caprinid will take his turn next week...

  1. I'm really enjoying your novice series. The feeling I'm getting from the AAR is that all those "small" actions that the PCs can accomplish are more meaningful.

  2. Thank you! Let's hope the PCs survive the mission, and then it will be interesting to see what the characters choose to do when they have more autonomy. What they spend their XP on will also show what they have taken from this experience, and perhaps indicate what they want to focus on next.
