DF Novices, Session 4 - sorting out the sheep from the goats
Session 4 was last week. I won't always have time for a detailed summary, which is why I try to encourage my players to contribute with their own IC take.
Session Date: Tuesday 18 October 2022
Party roster:
Agis Keylar, wood elf cleric, 64 points (PC)
Borgergorg, half-ogre barbarian, 65 points (PC)
Borgergorg, half-ogre barbarian, 65 points (PC)
Doran Longbeard, dwarf warrior (knight), 65 points (PC)
Eleanor Bayley, human thief, 65 points (PC)
Erizax Ofaris, human wizard, 65 points (PC)
Fenn Shepard, human scout, 65 points (PC)
Some notes from my recollection:
After defeating their caprinid opponents, the party ran up to where the last goblin standing was duelling the last remaining caprinid. The caprinid had already been wounded by the goblin, and was easily dispatched by the PCs.
The fight ended with Agis, Borgergorg, and Doran seriously injured (between 1/4 and 1/2 of HP remaining). Erizax was slightly wounded due to over-taxing his magical strength, and had collapsed from exhaustion. Eleanor and Fenn were slightly tired but completely uninjured.
The goblin seemed more concerned with his comrade than with anything else, beseeching the party to help heal the fallen goblin. Agis rendered first aid. A disagreement broke out between the PCs as to whether to do this or kill the surviving goblins The party was, with the non-humans in favour of rendering aid, and Fenn and Eleanor against; Erizax was unconscious and didn't get to have an opinion. Eleanor stomped away and killed a couple of the other downed but not dead goblins in anger.
Agis healed Borgergorg with a Minor Healing at level 3 (the best he can achieve at his current capability). He got a critical success, and healed 6 HP instead. Borgergorg is still injured but it is no longer serious. The party considered this a good omen.
The group spoke to the goblin through Borgergorg. It turned out that he had some basic understanding of Common, but it was easier for them to communicate via Orcish. The goblin advised that his people lived in this forest, and that the bestial caprinids seemed to be a new threat. PCs were concerned that the caravan would be coming through any moment. The goblin advised they would be allowed to pass, but told them to stick to the path. His name was Grebbik.
More goblins and hobgoblins arrived. There was much shouting back and forth in Goblintongue between Grebbik and the new arrivals as they approached. Several of the party was alarmed by these reinforcements. They wanted to know what was being said, and asked Borgergorg to translate, but he explained that he only spoke Orcish.
Grebbik tried to keep everyone calm. The hobgoblins looked like they were still spoiling for a fight, but cooler heads prevailed, and the PCs didn't give them a reason. As the goblin-kin came to collect their fallen, one of the hobgoblins jostled Borgergorg on the way past, as a deliberate provocation. The half-ogre stood firm (a quick contest of ST) but did not otherwise respond. The hobgoblin grunted and moved on.
After making certain that all the caprinids were definitely dead, the goblin-kin took away their own fallen, and the owl-bear which the party had slain. Borgergorg understood from Grebbik that the caravan was not to hunt in the forest or the uneasy truce might be broken. Grebbik thanked the "Elf scum" for healing his friend, and took off his belt, which he gave to Agis. The belt itself was old and tattered, but it had a shiny buckle. The goblin-kin left.
For party loot, Borgergorg recovered iron armbands and jagged sabres from the dead caprinids, and a curved short sword which the goblins left behind.
While the wizard recovered from exhaustion, Fenn and Eleanor headed back to look for the caravan, which should have arrived by now but hadn't. They found the caravan stopped in a state of pandemonium. The caravan itself had also been attacked by caprinids, and there had been casualties. Talni Barcoba, the head of the caravan (and their employer) was not happy, and demanded to know where the party had been. She sent Fenn back to fetch the others.

Eleanor reported to Baris. The party learned that caprinids had killed one of the caravan servants, and a pilgrim, and injured several others, before they were taken down. Baris was only mildly injured, however one of the NPC guards, Cynric, had received a slash to the arm and was unable to wield his sword. Both he and Baris were concerned.
Agis determined that the injury to Cynric's arm was likely only a termporary crippling, and the arm would recover once the warrior was back to full health. He tried to heal Cynric a couple times, with only marginal success. The caravan finally got moving again, and they arrived late to the camp site...
