DF Novices, Session 15 - "The Borgergorgs"

In this session the group dealt with the aftermath of the fight. We have already played another session since, so I will try to sum this up quickly and get it posted.

Session Date:    Tuesday 31 January 2023

Party roster:
Agis Keylar, wood elf cleric, 94 points (PC)
Borgergorg, half-ogre barbarian, 91 points (PC)
Doran Longbeard, dwarf warrior (knight), 86 points (PC)
Eleanor Bayley, human thief, 92 points (PC)
Erizax Ofaris, human wizard, 90 points (PC)
Fenn Shepard, human scout, 88 points (NPC)

With both Agis and Borgergorg awake but on the verse of collapsing at any moment, and with Doran seriously wounded but on his feet, the cleric was able to cast his healing spells on both of his injured companions (and with some fortunate rolls) restored the dwarf back to full health and the half-ogre from minus HP to about 3/4 of his total. Agis was far too injured (negative HP) to be able to heal himself, however.

The party set off once more in direction of Kuipos's farm. The revitalised Borgergorg was now able to carry his own gear, the wood elf, and the elf's gear, and still walk more quickly than Agis could have managed in his injured state. This was slow going, but was still faster (and safer) than if Agis had had to walk himself. It took the party about a day and a half to cover the distance that they might have managed in half a day in better condition, but they eventually came to the farm.

Kuipos and his family were clearly cautious of strangers (who wouldn't be, living isolated from everyone else in a wilderness with bandits and monsters). The (alleged) former King's Ranger had a bow in hand when the group approached. However the party was able to explain their intent, and that the wizard Turmion had sent them, and they were looking for news of the wizard's apprentice Perioni, who had apparently vanished.

Kuipos inivited the PCs into his home. His family cleared a table and they bade Borgergorg to lay down Agis upon it.
Kuipos had no news of Perioni, and did not know she was missing. He gave the PCs some advice, telling them to return to Bridgegate and speak to Perioni's betrothed who lived there, in case he knew more. Kuipos also suggested that they go to each of the other villages that the apprentice might have visited, in case they had any news of her. He gave them the rough direction and distance to each of the villages, as well as the name of a priestess to talk to in one village, and a constable to speak to back in Bridgegate. Kuipos said that he himself would search the wilderness as he knew of a few places to check, and told the group to return after 2 weeks. When the cleric awoke, Kuipos gave him a healing potion, and after drinking that Agis was at least able to stand up and walk by himself.

The PCs told of the attack by the men who identified themselves as soldiers of Baron Mylark. From the direction the men had been coming, Kuipos was able to confirm that they might not have been soldiers of the baron at all. The baron's castle was to the north of Mere, overlooking the pass, and these soldiers (or whatever they were) had been coming from the south, quite possibly the forest. If those had been men of the baron, they were roaming quite wide a distance on foot. In any case the Squire Marlen
in Mere (whom Erizax suspected as being cause of the attack) could not have sent these men after the group, for they came from in front of them, not behind. It seemed likely that the men almost certainly were not looking for the PCs (or even Agis) specifically. Which then raised the question of who they were, and why they were attacking clerics on sight...

Kuipos invited the party to stay the night and have dinner with his family, and head off in the morning, which they did. Before they left the farm, Borgergorg remembered that the party had in fact told these "soldiers" that they were headed to the farm. Considering that one of those men had escaped, Kuipos was not happy with the news that the party may have accidentally endangered his family. He decided to not to go looking for Perioni himself after all, until he could be sure that more of these villains would not come to his farm looking for revenge in his absence.

The trek to town was uneventful and the PCs were in Bridgegate by the end of the day. Once back in town they heard rumours of goblins attacking merchants near the town. The next day, the party spoke to Perioni's betrothed. He wasn't much help, but he was able to show the PCs a little portrait of Perioni. Still clearly
very anxious as to Perioni's whereabouts, he broke down when the party mentioned skeletons and Borgergorg bluntly speculated as to what might have become of her. At this the innkeeper told them to get out, and stop upsetting the other patrons.

The party returned the signed delivery letter to the merchant Ritalla, who promptly paid them the 200 coppers for completing the job. They did not tell that they had also been paid by the wizard. This was not a deliberate subterfuge by the PCs - they were more confused than anything. The double payment seems to have been a mistake by the wizard. Now the party is deciding how to address this. Erizax is insistent that they pay the wizard back once they have the means to do so.

They went looking for Constable Garyld, who told them that there was a reward of 100 silver staters for dealing with the problem of the goblin attacks, and that the goblins were believed to be holed-up in an abandoned mine in on the other side of the river. There was some discussion as to what constituted dealing with the problem. Borgergorg did not want to have to kill the goblins unless absolutely necessary, and was hopeful an agreement could be reached. Garyld told them what the town council's expectation was regarding the goblins. If the PCs felt they could find another solution, then he wasn't personally opposed to it. However he made it clear that the council would only pay up once it was certain there would be no more attacks by the goblins. The party said that they would take the job. Garyld asked them the name of their adventuring company. There was hesitation as the group had not decided a name, during this pause the half-ogre blurted out "The Borgergorgs" and Garyld wrote that down.

They paid off their debt to the potion merchant, in order to be able to once again buy more of his "discounted" healing potions. Doran flogged off the swords and bits of jewellery they had looted from their attackers. They kept the unidentified potion and the scroll case, which was found to contain a wizardly scroll of Rooted Feet. Erizax could cast it, but not learn it (at least not yet). Agis being an elf, should also be able to cast a spell from a wizardly scroll, however it would need to be a scroll written in elvish, as he can only speak the common tongue, not read it.

The PCs discussed their options and decided to deal with the goblin issue first, as that was a paying job. The missing apprentice and other mysteries could wait until they had some money...

  1. Every new game, I ask my players the name of their new group, and every time someone blunders some nonsense name and it stays that way for a long time...

    1. Yes indeed. When I previously asked my group between sessions to consider a name for their company, one of the players asked if anyone had any good puns :-( So compared to that possibility, the above choice was at least an in-character one.
