DF Khoramandu Sea, Session 74 - One Small Step
Due
to the coronavirus lockdown, we once again played remotely using
Hangouts. I don't use a VTT; when I need to show the battlefield, I use
paper maps and minis, and point a webcam at the table.

Location: Barony of Northhold. Heading south on the road from Lararno.
We resumed on the road just south of the town. With the wagon ahead of them on the road, the party now had to carry all their loot and food themselves. They spent some time putting their armour back on, deciding who would carry what, and divvying out the weight.
Davin having ensorcelled himself up the wazoo as usual (Haste; Lighten Burden; Walk on Air), ended up being a human pack mule, with a backpack and carrying two sacks, one tied to a staff and the other to the haft of a halberd.
They were approached by Constable Shurik as they were getting ready. The constable and two of his men rode up on horseback, with several more guards behind on foot. Before they got close, Bert ushered the two boys off the road and into the nearest field to hide.
Shurik asked the party if the had seen the two orphans, who had gone missing. Sister Jancy of the orphanage was beside herself with worry, he said. Miao assured Shurik that they had not seen the two boys. Shurik warned the party that Captain Ambrose was not happy with them, and advised against returning to town.
After the constable left, Bert and the boys emerged from the field, and discussion ensued. The party seemed baffled that the boys might have lied about there being an orphanage. Makil burst into tears and wanted to go back. Tod said he would take him home. The party insisted on returning with them in force to town, and were lucky to leave before the captain turned up and there was a confrontation or worse outside the town gates.
With the two orphans safely back in town, the party turned back along the southbound road. They passed through rolling countryside. They saw plenty of fields and the occasional village, but didn't veer from the road. Miao complained about the hike, but Yvor knew it would be several days walking before they would make it back to Marsh Hall, and they were still hoping to catch up with the wagon if possible.
After some miles of walking, the monotony was broken by the sighting of a giant in the distance. Bert, scouting ahead of the rest of the party, saw the giant first. The party proceeded cautiously at first, as it looked like the giant would eventually cross the road ahead of them. Once it became apparent that the giant was being chased by smaller humanoids, Miao rushed to intercept, with the rest of the party in toe.
Buffed with a Walk on Air spell from Davin, Miao ran over the countryside (literally). She got there as four caprinids (goat-like beast-folk) were trying to surround a man of some 12+ feet tall. Two had halberds and two had swords and shields. The giant had only a huge club. The swords were largely ineffective, but the caprinids with halberds landed three successful blows on the giant before Miao could close. They in turn, were successful in dodging the huge club.
The giant was reeling from his wounds, but with the assistance of Miao, the battle turned. Miao cut down two caprinids, and the giant himself floored the other two. The rest of the party soon arrived but the fight was already over. The giant sat down exhausted, and Warian tended to him with Faith Healing.*
The respite was short lived, as Bert and Hemmu heard the sounds of a host approaching. They had a few seconds to line up before the first wave arrive. Bert hid in a bush. Miao and Yvor saw there were four half-naked barbarians wearing horned helmets charging to meet them. Yvor recognised them to be savage volgs! Behind these men could be seen more warriors approaching, with several of them on horseback.
We ended it there as it was getting late. Next session will start with the imminent fight with the four barbarians. Then we will see how the party deals with the rest of the horde...

*Faith Healing, being a holy ability and not a spell, means that in does not suffer the cost multiplier to cast on a large target. At least, that was my interpretation of the rules; I believe that's right. Very useful when healing a SM +2 giant. The giant still benefited from the magical healing multiplier for having over 20 HP, of course. Seems only fair, as Faith Healing is an expensive advantage at 33 points, relative to spells. Plus it requires physical contact ("laying on of hands") so it's less ubiquitous when your patient is still actively fighting.
