DF Khoramandu Sea, Session 82 - Putting off the Lich

The campaign has resumed after break of several months (both IC and out). It was good to have a break, but it's great to be back.

Session Date:    Thursday 7 January 2021

Party roster:
Miao Miao, cat-folk swashbuckler, 486 points (PC)
- Jenkins, human servant, 243 points (NPC Ally)
- Brother Warian, human monk (initiate), 241 points (NPC Ally)
Sir Yvor Gryffyn, human knight, 403 points (PC)
Davin Emberwood, human wizard (wizard), 428 points (PC)
Childerbert "Bert" Ingoberger, halfling locksmith (thief), 369 points (PC)
Hemmu Gahrol, half-orc knight, 334 points (PC)
Adam Aesalor, half-orc wizard, 300 points (PC)

This time we did the session online using Google Meet for the voice chat, and MapTool VTT for the dice rolling. There was no actual combat this session, as we had a lot of catching up to do. There was plenty of roleplay, and the party now has the start of a plan to deal with the lich-marquessa.

I expect the tactical aspect will work quite well with MapTool. I have used it briefly a few years ago, so I am optimistic for that. We should find out next week how the group likes it in practice. We have one player who was unable to install the MapTool software, so for his benefit one of the other players was able to present their screen using Google Meet. This could also be beneficial for me indirectly as GM, as I will also be able to see the player view in real-time on a separate screen, without having to toggle the view constantly on my version of the MapTool application.

Some 18 weeks has elapsed in-game since we paused. The PCs have spent the majority of that time training to improve their abilities and learn new skills.

What the players discovered or confirmed this session:

- There has been a recent increase in ghoul activity, and town watch patrols have been attacked in the sewers.

- There is no prior record of the lich-marquessa in or beneath the town, and she (it) almost certainly predates the town by centuries.

- The temple is not the expert on liches, and referred the party to the magician's guild. Sir Yvor pressed for more information, and the high priest will ask for an inquisitor.

- The master of the mages guild explained that the only way to kill a lich permanently was a zone of no magic. They had no records of the record of the lich-marquessa in their library, and no direct experience of liches amongst the guild. He was adamant that there had been no occurrence of lichdom in the town in decades.

- In unrelated news that there has been increase in orcs coming over the mountains, and the baron has dealt with this himself.

- Some other rumours and details which individual party members haven't yet shared.

There is prior knowledge amongst some of the long-standing PCs of a no-mana area which they could possibly use. However there was much discussion amongst the party about how to force or trick the lich into the zone. That is the difficult part of the plan which is as yet undecided.

Next session the party will speak to Sergeant Manuta about the town patrol attacks, and then enter the sewers to hunt down some ghouls, with the aim to capture one for interrogation.
