GURPS DF Session 50 - Caves of Chaos, part 4

Llandor's player couldn't make the session, so the party had to react to his missing ranged power and outdoor skills...

Session Date: Thursday 28 November 2019

Party roster:
Miao Miao, cat-folk swashbuckler, 391 points (PC)
- Jenkins, human servant, 186 points (NPC Ally)
- Brother Warian, human monk (initiate), 177 points (NPC Ally)

- Ulia, human guide, unknown points (NPC hireling)
- Gregus, human sellsword, unknown points (NPC Hireling)
- Mace, human mace-wielder, unknown points (NPC Hireling)
Davin Emberwood, human wizard, 326 points (PC)

Sister Miriam Suntemple, human cleric, 297 points (PC)
Childerbert "Bert" Ingoberger, halfling locksmith (thief), 251 points (PC)

Location: Edge of Umbradaan Forest, Borderlands between Ioscany and Pyrrhon

After the fight with the hobgoblins, the party rested and healed. Childerbert searched the bodies and found a small collective fortune in coins between the 9 hobgoblins. The halfling passed his self-control roll, and Bert was able to honestly share the spoils without succumbing to his kleptomania. Warian channelled his Faith Healing to bring Miriam, Jenkins, and Davin each back to 1 point shy of full HP.

While everyone else rested Llandor disappeared, ostensibly to scout out the area for any other threats, although this may have been an excuse (Llandor suffers from the Loner disadvantage).
Llandor left his in-progress map with Warian for safe keeping.
In absence of their scout, the party had no-one else with outdoor skills. Not knowing how long he would be, and not wanting to risk pressing on without Llandor, the group collectively decided to return to the keep. There they would recruit a local guide who could lead them to the caves, and some additional hirelings as muscle.

Warian guided the party back to the keep using Llandor's map, and they returned without further incident. It was about noon when they reached the keep. Miao recruited a local guide Ulia to take them as far as the ravine, although she wouldn't enter the caves. Bert bought the party a quick round whilst they were waiting for Ulia to be ready to depart. For extra muscle, they found a sword and board mercenary of large head and bulging biceps named Gregus. The party was also approached by a man of limited vocabulary, who seemingly went by the name of "Mace". He carried little more than a large specimen of his eponymous weapon. Both men were hired.

Davin tried unsuccessfully to buy wizard scrolls from the curate at the shrine in the keep. The party departed the keep about an hour after they arrived. Ulia guided them to the caves without any random encounters; the journey took 3 hrs.
Looking down the ravine from the eastern end, the party could only see the nearest two caves, but Ulia assured them that there were more cave openings further in. The party tried to ascertain which cave had the evil cult.

Ulia told them that the first cave almost certainly had goblins, but she wasn't willing to scout further into the ravine without additional danger pay. Bert volunteered to scout himself instead. Ulia departed without extra pay, but otherwise on friendly terms.

The party waited in the forest at the edge of the ravine, while Bert went in alone to scout. The halfling moved stealthily between each small wood and cluster of trees, one to the other, across the floor of the ravine in a zig-zagging motion. His small size, light encumbrance, and ridiculously high Stealth skill, meant that Bert would be very hard to spot.

The thief spotted another cave opening, with kobolds apparently on active guard duty in and around the nearby trees. I revealed the map of the ravine (sans interior cave map) with the multiple cave entrances as Bert progressed. The halfling returned to the party safely, having seemingly scouted the entire ravine from the valley floor without having been spotted.

Knowing only where the kobolds and goblins were, the party agreed to attack the latter, expecting an easier fight, as the former appeared more organised defensively. They arranged themselves into formation at the entrance to the goblin cave, and proceeded in. Only a few yards into the cave, the party stopped at a crossroads. Davin had a Continual Light spell on one of his daggers, and Miriam cast Flaming Weapon on her broadsword. Both spells shed light equivalent to a torch.

Bert crept to the edge of the effective illumination, and listened. Soon he heard approaching footsteps, and the party got ready. There was a shout from the dark, as the goblins saw the party light. The goblins ranked up in two rows of 3 in the corridor, spears at the ready.
Miao, Davin, and Mace, made short work of the goblins. Miao leaping after the two which turned to flee, and she ran the last one through from behind.

Miriam searched the bodies; the goblins had a handful of copper coins. Davin took 10 meals worth of provisions from the goblins' sack.

Intending to explore further, Bert took a small stone out of his pack, upon which Davin had previously cast Continual Light. The halfling proceeded down the tunnel, and was shot by a goblin arrow, but luckily it was only a graze. Bert threw the light into the darkness, and the stone illuminated a small cavern. There was a commotion amongst the goblins, and one of them snatched up the stone and threw the light back at the halfling. The goblins fled the room and Miao gave chase, with Bert close behind.

Through a small roughly furnished cavern the party ran, and onto a flight of steps going upwards, Miao and Bert still in the lead.

We paused there, because it was the end of the session. I will leave further details to the players' in-character accounts (which may or may not be factually accurate tales); for this I give my usual 1 CP experience bonus.
