GURPS DF Session 51 - Caves of Chaos, part 5

In addition to the return of Llandor's player, we had a new player join our table for the first time. Hopefully not the last.

 Our new player
took on the mantle of a previously played pregen PC. As we were resuming "in media res", it made sense to reintroduce Llandor with former party-member Sir Yvor Gryffyn, and our newest member agreed.

The session was one big long fight, so not much RP, just combat. I have briefly summarised as best I can remember.

Session Date: Thursday 5 December 2019

Party roster:
Miao Miao, cat-folk swashbuckler, 391 points (PC)
- Jenkins, human servant, 186 points (NPC Ally)
- Brother Warian, human monk (initiate), 177 points (NPC Ally)

- Gregus, human sellsword, unknown points (NPC Hireling)
- Mace, human mace-wielder, unknown points (NPC Hireling)
Davin Emberwood, human wizard, 326 points (PC)

Sister Miriam Suntemple, human cleric, 297 points (PC)
Childerbert "Bert" Ingoberger, halfling locksmith (thief), 251 points (PC)
Llandor the Gray, wood-elf scout, 290 points (PC)
Sir Yvor Gryffyn, human knight, 309 points (PC)

Sir Yvor arrived in the Borderlands to join his comrades' quest, but found that they had already set off. Llandor the Gray returned to the Keep, having tracked the party back there from the campsite, only to find Sir Yvor instead. They set off for the Caves together...

Location: Caves of Chaos, Borderlands between Ioscany and Pyrrhon

Miao reached the corner landing of the stairs, but only proceeded as far as Bert's light would allow. Above was only darkness.
Banging and shouting could be heard from the top of the stairs (this later was revealed to be goblins trying to get through the door, or to get the attention of the hobgoblins beyond).
Arrows from the goblins came out of the darkness, but missed Miao thanks to her Missile Shield, previously cast by Davin.
On the corner landing, Bert threw his Continual Light stone up to the top of the stairs ahead of Miao, who ran up to cut down the waiting goblins.
At the bottom,
Llandor and Yvor arrived behind the group, with news of commotion (presumably more goblins) from the behind them.
Llandor joined Mace, Jenkins, and Warian in running up the stairs.
Davin turned back in order to help Yvor, Miriam, and Gregus waiting at the bottom of the steps.
Davin cast a Complex Illusion with the idea of having the stairwell appearing to be blocked by a cave-in.

Yvor however decided to meet the horde of goblins head on, leaving the safety of the tunnel to face a dozen or so goblins and what turned out to be a big ogre in the open room.
Miriam and Gregus joined Yvor, and so Davin assembled the phantom rocks into an illusion of humanoid bodyguards flanking the wizard.
The fight developed on two fronts, at either end of the stairs.
The defeated goblins at the top of the stairs were replaced  by hobgoblins coming from the door beyond; these were a tougher proposition than the goblins, usually taking more than one hit to drop them.

Yvor, accompanied by Miriam and Gregus, cut into the horde of goblins pouring into the room.
Davin threw a Concussion spell over the goblins, impacting the ceiling of the corridor behind; about a third of the goblins were stunned as a result.
The bigass ogre was not stunned, and ran around the mob to attack.
Yvor traded blows for a second with the ogre, before landing a crit, and running the ogre through with his longsword.
In the course of the fight the goblins have been quite unlucky, with two of them breaking their blades on Yvor's longsword or shield, one stepping up to Miriam and dropping its spear in the process, and another lining up to shoot Gregus, only for the bowstring to snap.

Mace stood beside Miao for a time, but was eventually dropped by a slash from a hobgoblin blade.

The ogre looked to be badly wounded by Yvor's thrust into his belly, but he's still standing. Perhaps he's too dumb to know he's beaten. If he manages to land a hit with his flail before he drops, then it's going to hurt....

We had to pause the fight there for lack of time. Below are some photos of the split battle, taken at the end of the session.
