DF Khoramandu Sea, Session 73 - Leaving Lararno

Due to the coronavirus lockdown, we once again played remotely using Hangouts. I don't use a VTT; when I need to show the battlefield, I use paper maps and minis, and point a webcam at the table.

Session Date: Thursday 16 July 2020

Party roster:
Miao Miao, cat-folk swashbuckler, 411 points (PC)
Jenkins, human servant, 204 points (NPC Ally)
Brother Warian, human monk (initiate), 204 points (NPC Ally)

Sir Yvor Gryffyn, human knight, 347 points (PC*)
Davin Emberwood, human wizard, 342 points (PC)
Childerbert "Bert" Ingoberger, halfling locksmith (thief), 287 points (PC)
Hemmu Gahrol, half-orc knight, 275 points (PC)
Adam Aesalor, half-orc wizard, 257 points (PC)

*Player was unfortunately absent, so Yvor was kept in the background.

Location: Town of Lararno, Barony of Northhold.

We played last night. The session was entirely in town. There was no combat.
In brief:

- Realising that the curfew would likely be enforced, the prior plan for most of the party to go out at night was debated and abandoned in favour of Bert scouting town alone.

- Bert had the run of the small town (his Stealth roll was a critical success) and avoided at least one patrol of town guards out in force. He found no orphans sleeping rough however. He did discover a brothel apparently operating in spite of the curfew, but did not investigate further.

- The next morning, the merchant they were travelling with prepared to leave town early, and the party had to move quickly to be ready. Miao went to speak to the mayor.

- Davin bribed an orphan outside the inn to fetch the boy Makil who had tried to steal his purse the night before, and in due course two boys brought Makil to the inn for their reward (1 shilling each).

- Meanwhile Miao had to bribe several guards to get an immediate audience with the mayor. The resulting meeting was inconclusive. Miao wanted an apology from the captain of the town guard for perceived offence caused at the town gates. The mayor seemed sympathetic to Miao's complaint, but she was unwilling to get involved considering that the party would be leaving town immanently.

- Over a hearty breakfast of porridge and bacon, Davin convinced the boy Makil that the temple orphanage in Marsh Hall would be a better place to grow up than on the streets of Lararno. He did such a good job that one of the other boys also decided to join them.

- The third boy left, and Bert shadowed him to discover whether he was going to report to anyone. Having confirmed that someone was being told, Bert hurried back to the inn.

- Miao returned to find the merchant had left in her absence. The party left town with the orphans, after collecting their confiscated weapons and other items from the town guards at the gate. Adam cast invisibility on the two boys to hide them until everyone was safely outside the town.

- The party intend to hurry south on foot, and hopefully catch up with the wagon on the road.

My thoughts:

I had anticipated a couple of opportunities for combat to occur, however the players studiously avoided any such risks. In the end the party left town without stirring up trouble. Perhaps this was in part because we were down a player. To my mind, the balance went from 3/6 the party in favour of investigating the town further, to 2/5 in favour and 3/5 against. This certainly factored into my decision-making on whether to have NPCs push the issue.

We will see how the dynamic changes when the 6th player returns, hopefully next week.

Finally, here is a small snip of hexmap showing the surrounding barony. It might not be 100% accurate, but it shows what the PCs currently know.
