GURPS 2020 PDF Challenge - Backed
I backed the Kickstarter for Steve Jackson Games' GURPS 2020 PDF Challenge. No surprises there, really; the question was less "if" and more "at what level".
Ultimately I've gone for the $99 deal (the unlocked Kickstarter PDFs, plus $125 worth of PDF back-catalogue). I figure that there are still a few 3e setting books that I don't have, along with some that only I have in physical rather than digital form. (The indices in GURPS books are generally very good, however CTRL-F is still useful. Also a PDF is lighter to carry.)
Ten of the 12 PDFs have already been unlocked, and we're only 4 days in. We have another 9 days to unlock the remaining two PDFs. So, what's available?
These are unlocked:
GURPS Action 6 - Tricked Out Rides
GURPS Hot Spots - The Incense Trail
GURPS Template Toolkit 3 - Starship Crew
GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Adventure 3 - Deep Night and the Star
How to be a GURPS GM - Ritual Path Magic
GURPS Steampunk Adventure - The Broken Clockwork World
GURPS Reign of Steel - Read the Sky
GURPS Monster Hunters Encounters 1
GURPS Action 7 - Mercenaries
GURPS Boardroom and Curia - Tomorrow Rides
This is next to be unlocked:
GURPS Horror - Beyond the Pale
And the final PDF is apparently to be:
GURPS Dungeon Fantasy 21 - Megadungeons

So, some good stuff in there! Considering that I am running a Dungeon Fantasy campaign right now, I can see myself getting immediate use out of DF21 (if it is unlocked) and the DF adventure (even if I don't run it at some point, there will definitely be useful bits to mine from it). Longer term, I might use the Reign of Steel material (I ran an aborted RoS game a while back, and might do so again under the right circumstances). The Incense Trail will be inspirational; even if I don't ever use it directly, it will probably be a fun read. The starship crew template toolkit, the Action series, and the Monster Hunters Encounters will probably all have broad usage for their respective genres. The other books I am not so excited about, but for $3 it's a good deal whichever way you cut it.
Some may not be happy with SJGames doing a KS for a run of PDFs with no physical goals/rewards. Personally I don't mind, as SJG doesn't like shipping internationally, anyway. From my perspective it just means simpler logistics and a faster turnaround time as a result.
Is Kickstarter the future for GURPS publishing? Some may not like that either. Mailanka speculates why that might be so, and why that's probably a good thing.
