Miao Miao's Musings
So, there times when Miao think very quickly. That often come as surprise to friends, who used to Miao happy to sit around do nothing, think nothing and say less. As mention in previous entry, Miao think much, much more than even friends think.
And that mean, when Miao thinking quickly because day suddenly succession of crises, there no time to explain why Miao suddenly chivying everyone out of door towards town gate, despite having ordered food and sat down to second breakfast no more than two minutes before.
But time was important, yes yes, Miao started realising this when meeting Mayor Ilga. She expensive person to go see, cost Miao over a crown just to bribe guards to forget Miao not have appointment, but she also person who know things not right in town. Now, Miao not always subtle (yes yes, Miao can hear you laugh even through page), but it clear Mayor Ilga not happy with way things are in town. Much money, she say, and people very powerful own town guard.
That, of course, problem.
It problem for town, naturally, because Town guard is Town guard, not rich person guard, and when town guard tough on crime while in pocket of persons with deep pockets, drowning in coin, then it follow that only criminals that pay to rich persons capable of committing crime. In short, persons who own town guard own town, and also in charge of all crime committed in crime.
It sure sign of crooked-tail, somewhere.
Miao promise not to challenge Captain Ambrose to duel, although Miao got impression Mayor Ilga not mourn captain's loss, to avoid making life more difficult for Mayor. And Mayor on verge of asking Miao and friends for help in dealing with town problem, but needed time to think.
It okay, Miao said, send word to inn or to Marsh Hall, in case Miao need leave town in hurry.
While Miao talking with Mayor, bribing guards and having suspicions confirmed, Davin managed to convince Urchin to come to inn. Miao not sure how, not sure she want know, but result was now two Urchin willing to leave town, and third gone off in huff, followed by Bert.
See, plan to find Urchin in dark... it never happen. Sir Yvor not willing to break curfew, Davin not willing to take risk, Miao and Hemmu only people can see in dark... It foolish. So, instead, Bert scout around at night, find that guards patrol in group of half dozen, and turn blind eye to certain crime, while known for hanging for other crime.
Now, with two Urchins fed, Bert come back, say third Urchin go speak with other urchin, who ran off in hurry. Miao been warned by Mayor that Captain Ambrose certain to stop urchins from leaving, calling us all child abductors, and make much, much trouble.
Miao also under no illusion urchins would disappear after trying to run. In town, they hang criminals. Anyone who not pay town guard is criminal. Miao not going to allow children be hanged, simply for seeking better life.
So Miao go from sitting down having second breakfast to getting people out door and after wagon that set off little while earlier.
Luckily, finger wagglers both remember one could turn others invisible, and so two urchins walked through gate under nose of guard, and guard not even having sniff.
Ha!
But while Miao, Yvor and Hemmu collect equipment taken on previous day, there appear men who guard say are men of Captain Ambrose. Clearly, they not there for friendly chat about weather, investment opportunities in town logging industry and by the by, apropos nothing, we abduct any children lately?
Miao though it best not have conversation and left town. With Mister Stabby on belt around waist, yes yes, but also under word of honour not to shed blood in town. So, Miao left with tail between legs, and Miao not too proud to admit this.
Now back on road, but Miao keeping weary eye over shoulder. Miao admit, will not be happy, will not feel safe, until past border marker of Marrowmarsh.
And ugh! Miao forgot to buy tent, AGAIN!
